Old Ski-Boose; Budget Restoration
Picked up this (what I believe to be) 1971 Mark I Ski Boose a while back at a swap meet. Ended up being rougher than expected, but that's usually how it goes... The unique long skis were still solid though, and probably worth it just for those alone. It's not a factory correct restoration, but good enough to put this old sleigh back into service. Had a special guest stop by during the intro. ;)

$10.00 Stihl 026 Chainsaw
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.4 месяца назад
Picked up this well scavenged parts saw a while back, because even though it was missing a lot of parts, it appeared to be solid mechanically. With the availability of cheap aftermarket parts these days it made sense to actually put it back together as a complete saw. All in there's about $40 for this saw. I imagine something broke on this saw that took it out of action, then it was pillaged fo...
Suzuki Fury, Will It Ever Run??
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Round 2 for this sled... Years back it was resurrected with plans to grass drag it, should be a decent for stock class with the factory twin pipes. But, things didn't pan out, and it refused to run, appeared to be ignition issues. The project sat for years while I searched for motivation, finally found some this season and went back in for more frustration to try and get this thing running righ...
Power Steering Pump Operated Car Lift
Просмотров 179 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Another case of Build It or Buy It? Ended up with an old Rotary 4 post car lift that was missing the hydraulic lift motor/pump. Had been debating about what hydraulic pump to get, some of the cheap import ones just didn't have stellar reviews... So, why not try to piece something together instead? Safety Note: The hydraulic portion of a lift like this is used only to raise the vehicle, it is no...
2 Stroke Head "Machining"

Sometimes you just have to get a little med-evil on engine components. Lathes and milling machines? Pfft, who needs 'em... Just start gouging on it. When working with parts like these there are actually some pretty close tolerances and parameters that have to be worked with. But, that doesn't mean some simple methods of material removal won't still work with a bit of craftiness.
Another 13 Years, After 13 in the Swamp...

This is a throwback to the old diesel Landcruiser video from years back. At the time, 13 years sitting in a swamp seemed like forever. Now, this old rig has been back action for as long as it was idle. Kind of hard to believe. This truck has really shown how tough a toyota can be!
Building a Chainsaw Powered Winch

Where there's a will, there's a way! Sometimes you just have build it... A chainsaw powered winch has been on my list of "cool tools" that would be nice to have, but never came across a used one for sale. A new one was just too much dinero to justify for occasional use, so the next best thing is to just make it yourself. Converting things over to gasoline power is always a good time, of course ...
Reed 207 - 7" Bench Vise
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.11 месяцев назад
Picked up this cool old vise at a recent swap meet, it's pretty big one! 7" wide jaws, around 200 lbs. Kind of always wanted a really big vise, and couldn't say no when this one showed up. Coincidentally enough, Fireball Tool also just did a video where he strength tested a very similar constructed Morgan vise, with less than spectacular results. It was also surprising to see some of the fit an...
Prepping the Zilla for Trail Duty

The 1989 LT500R Quadzilla is back in its natural habitat, the shop... This time we try to get the world's most unreliable atv ready for trail use. This would be a much better fit for a newer, more comfortable, 4 stroke utility machine. But, apparently doing things the hard way is the path I've chosen... The ole zilla has sort of been back together and running for a while now, but there was a lo...
ECM Failure - Dodge 12 Valve Cummins
Просмотров 5 тыс.Год назад
The OBD1 computer got fried on the 1994 12 valve Cummins, so we try out some DIY repair techniques on it. Bad capacitors are a common problem with older electronics like this, so that's always a good place to start. Bonus feature is a 1988 F-150 ECM that also failed. Not every unit is an easy repair, but there's a good chance some simple repairs can get you back on the road.

When you showed the bottom there's a ring around the body of the jack and the waffle /Simpson name bottom , that piece can be un-screwed to clean /replace the gears . I own about six of these super jacks 20-50 tons ,i used them to lift houses for shoring to replace foundations . They'll lift a house no problem .

You wanna do this on a nice hot, dry day. Because the steel frame on your truck will hold moisture. And once you pack all that oil and grease onto your frame, it will trap that moisture under it. Whenever I paint steel in the colder weather, I always heat it up with a torch first to burn all the moisture out of it.

The block inside you were talking about is called the sleeve and it rides on the plunger. Even if the plunger was stuck in the up position the sleeve would still be on the bottom because it's in a shutdown position. All the way down leaves the spill Port open. All the way up it completely blocks to spell port and you have full throttle.

Very interesting repair! I wonder, does it need nuts on the inside too so that the prevents compression and not just extension? Any updates on how well it's still running? I just used JB Weld (a lot of JB Weld) and a C-Clamp.

  • @afhostie
    @afhostie 27 дней назад

My hypothesis, is that over time that gasket on top will shrink which causes the clamping force of the bolts to lessen so much that the bolts can back out. I also believe that the top cover provides structural rigidity to the engine block. So once the clamping force no longer exists from the bolts to hold the top cover tight, the structural rigidity of the top cover is lost and the block starts ripping itself apart. So many people have said that the fix is to loc-tite the bolts. While that might prevent the bolts from backing out it isn't going to address the loss of clamping force as the gasket degrades. I think the real solution is to have so sort of brass washer integrated into the gasket around all the bolt holes. This would allow the clamping force to remain despite the gasket shrinking over time. At that point it's just an oil leak to fix instead of an engine block. However, you could just throw gasket maker on the top and bottom of the gasket which would probably be a more permanent fix for the leaks.

What I do on the 026 mufflers is drill the two extra holes but then open them up to join up with the original hole. I do other work to the cylinder and muffler. Clean the ports up, port match etc and check squish and that makes for a strong running saw.

Your pretty much a pro now on those older 80-90's ecu's. Its pretty much always bad caps with them. The cummins ecu can be repaired if you really wanted. Its a pretty basic board and rather easy to make new connections for everything. I used to do those ones once in awhile back in the day and they all typically looked like that. Don't usually accept them these days. The potting makes it take too long so there is just not much money to be made for the amount of time invested.
